A true MOM-ent

When I was a little girl I can remember whenever I'd have an itch my Mom would scratch it... I mean literally! I can still remember how her nails felt on my back. She would always ask after a little bit if that was "good" and I know I always said a little more. Just because it felt so great!

I used to bite my fingernails for YEARS! And shortly before I (finally) got prego with Aidan I stopped. When I was pregnant with both kids the prenatal vitamins worked wonders. I used to have to cut my nails every other week cause they grew so long.

I still have kind of long nails but not like my moms. She has these long pretty nails that always seemed to be the perfect shape. Mine are kind of stubby (like my fingers themselves) and more square than hers. But I guess they get the trick done. My little Aidan loves when I scratch his back. I just went up to tuck him in again and he rolled over and said in his sleep that he had an itch. I said, "Do you want me to scratch it?" He sleepily replied, "Yeah." Then he rolled over and went back to sleep.

YES!!!! Another Mom-ent! (Love you Mama! thanks for all the back scratches!)

Nana and Papa

This weekend my parents came down to MD to visit. They went to Baltimore to Maureen and Wade's house so we headed up there Saturday afternoon for dinner and a sleepover. We had to drive 2 separate cars because Sean had to work today. Shortly after we left the house and headed up to Baltimore, Aidan says to me, "I'm so exciting to see Nana and Papa."

I was "so exciting too!" We love to see them... and only wish we did more often. Love you Nana and Papa at New Nork!

The 4 wheel test

Last weekend we went down to Pat and Mary's house for the night. We haven't seen them in a while and needed to get out of dodge for the night so we headed down Saturday afternoon. We planned to grill some delicious ribeye steaks and hang out. We arrived around 5 Saturday afternoon and just hung out. The kids took their positions on the couch with their toys and antagonized Regan for the next few hours. The adults just hung in the kitchen, chatting and enjoying some bloody marys. We had a great evening of yummy food and great conversation. Around 11 or so the kids started to fall asleep on the couch so I took them up to bed. We were spending the night in Ian's room on the 3rd floor. Ian was at a sleepover party for the night. His room has not only a full or queen bed but also a really comfy futon.

The kids and I got settled in on the futon and didn't wake up til morning. I walked into the bathroom with Aidan when he woke up. As I stood there waiting for him to pee I was looking out the window. It's really quite a view from their 3rd floor. Pat and Mary purchased Sean's old blue pick up truck from his dad a few years ago. So as I stood in the window I started to giggle to myself thinking "Oh, I bet that old truck is buried in this snow!" I looked around the front yard and as I turned to my right I noticed a vehicle in their driveway. I turned my head thinking "oh there's the truck." I quickly realized that it's NOT the truck... it's my brand new PATHFINDER! It was sitting a little ways up Pat and Mary's driveway. Which by the way had not been plowed because there was a snow drift on it so they have been using their neighbors driveway. I basically bolted out of the bathroom and started in on Sean. "Oh Seeaann. What the hell is my car doing stuck at the end of the driveway in the snow?" Sean: "he he he, Uh Pat and I went down to Gateway ( local bar) last night and I wanted to show Pat our 4 wheel drive." Me: "Well you better get downstairs and get your ASS a shovel cause you're diggin my car OUT!"

He got up and headed downstairs while I waited for Clare to wake up. He and Pat got a friend of Pat's to come down with his farm equipment to get them out. What do you mean them? Well I guess late night when this all transpired Pat went up the driveway and got Mary's suburban to try to give my car a little push to get it out. Well guess what? They were both STUCK! So Posey came over to free the fools cars from the snow drift of a driveway. As we watched out the windows we finally saw 2 free cars and 2 sorry asses walking up the driveway with shovels in hand. As Mary and I shared a good laugh from the warmth of the house she headed out with her camera to document the evidence of dumbassedness.

After she took the picture and headed back toward the house Pat called her back to show her what really happened. The chain they were using on Posey's escalade to pull the suburban out snapped off the escalade and smashed into the back window of Mary's suburban. He showed her the window and she flipped out. I think she seemed calm since I later told Sean that if it were my new car that had the window smashed in as a result of their stupidity he would have been walking home to Edgewater from Broomes Island! Only to find out that I changed the locks on him. HA HA! Lucky for Mary that suburban is 12 years old and she's now closer than ever to getting her new car. I guess from now on we have to HIDE the keys when these 2 ding dongs are together!!!!

What's black and white and blonde?

AIDAN!

This boy is one of the most literal people I've ever met!

Last weekend we were at Mary and Pat's house and they made breakfast. Mary has this waffle iron that she got at Williams Sonoma a couple of years ago and it's got farm shapes in it. So when Mary asked Clare which animal she wanted she picked a cow. When we were sitting at the table, I said to Clare, "eat your cow... take a bite." Aidan promptly looks at me and says, "It's NOT a cow Mommy, it's a waffle."

Geez Louise! Is he literal or WHAT?!

Two for Tuesday

Today was our early day at work. We left there around 1 o'clock and the kids were asking me to go to the playground. "The playground is still covered in snow!" I replied. "Well can we go to Chuckie Cheese?" they begged. "No, but we can go bowling if you want." The reply to that was simple... CHEERS all around!

We got to the bowling alley and it was "Two for Tuesday" the guy informed me. Buy one, get one free. So I said, "Great, I'll buy 2 games that way we get 4." Well who knew how long only 1 game would take (about 2 hours). We got shoes, each picked out a ball, then started to play. After we threw a couple of gutter balls (thank goodness for those bumpers) they were all over the place. Aidan managed to find the video games and the vending machine simultaneously. So we had to get a snack. I refused to pay for video games since I just paid to BOWL! We got a snack and were right back in the game (well 1 1/2 games- we bailed on the rest). They both really enjoyed it... Aidan more so, but I think that's only because we couldn't find a PINK ball small enough for Clare to roll down the lane.

All in all another great day with my two favorite Bobbins!

This Party is OFFICIALLY over...

When the holidays come around each year I basically throw away any type of self control I have over food and drinks. I give into what little will power I have and ride the fat kid train all the way to New Years. And this year was no different than any other. Especially because we were in NY for Christmas and I really cannot control myself up there. It's an all out party from the day we arrive until the day we depart. But I must say well worth the workouts later!

New Years came along and I was ready and equipped with a plan of action. I would walk Saddie all of January (mission accomplished) and in February start to kick the exercise plan into high gear so when the shorts/bathing suit weather arrived in 2010 I'd be more than ready. Now normally this is not a problem considering we live in the mid-Atlantic where most of the winter might as well be April because it's so mild.

Low and behold, this year I stand corrected to say the least! We have endured 2 full blown blizzards already and one other significant storm before the blizzards even arrived. So now that we have 3 feet of snow melting all around us and then re-freezing it's making my motivation sink quickly. Lucky for me, Maureen and I have successfully given up all sweets for the full lenten season the past 2 years. Of course, Lent barely ends and the gloves come off and we dive right back in. But it has proven to be a great jumping off point for the winter pound shedding.

Tomorrow is Mardi Gras and that means I've got one more day of the fat girl party and that's IT! I'm going to sew my lips together until my birthday! I managed to gain about 2-3 pounds at Christmas and another 3 during the back to back blizzards. Wow! Embarrassing but I have to say I'm pretty impressed that the damage wasn't more! Luckily I can still fit into my pants. Albeit, not that comfortably for some pairs but I can still squeeze them on.

SO tomorrow is my last day of junk food and then I'm going to start my "Perfect 10in 2010" plan. I'm not quite sure what that is going to be yet, but I'm sure I'll keep you posted!

The Third Muskateer

When I look back on my childhood I have tons of wonderful memories. We spent lots of time with our huge family who all (for the most part) lived in Amityville too. It was great! I can remember millions of parties in various backyards around town, where the adults would stand around and talk and laugh and tell stories of their childhood. All the while the children would run around like lunatics. We would play tag, wiffle ball, and running bases, kick ball, drink tons of generic soda either our of a can or a 3 liter bottle in blue ribbed plastic cups and constantly laugh!

We also spent a lot of time with our other "Aunts and Uncles". They were my parents friends who we called "Aunt and Uncle" too - Aunt Diane, Uncle Bill, Aunt Linda, Uncle Dave, Aunt Ellen, Uncle Don. As if we didn't have enough of those and didn't need help deciphering who was who... we had another whole group of non-blood related "aunts and uncles." Those families were the Reins, Hellers, and McVeetys. We would get our Christmas trees with them, go to the pumpkin patch, go to Amityville beach to take swimming lessons, go to the Cedar Overlook (the ocean beach), and have bbq at each others houses. All the kids were about the same ages so it worked out great for the parents...lots of fun and lots of arguing (ha ha!). Here's the break down of the same ages.

Kerry McDonough, Michael Heller and Laura McVeety - all 3 years older than me
Darren McVeety - 1 year older than me
Maureen McDonough, Erin McDonough, Billy Rein, Chrissy Heller - same age
Kelly Rein - 2 years younger than me
Jenny McDonough, Amy Heller - 3 years younger than me
Mickey McDonough - 5 years younger than me

As time passed and we all got older, we all got involved in other things so we kind of grew apart. We (Maureen and I) ended up living with Kelly Rein when she was in college at Towson and we were working in MD after college. It was a blast! Lots of funny stories...for another post. Anyway, Kel and Maun lived very close to each other for a couple of years. Kel and Greg moved about a year ago a little further down the road but they still see each other all the time. (which I'm TOTALLY jealous of) Kel and Greg have Quinn who is a totally adorable 2 year old. Ellie and Quinn love to play together and so do my kids when we actually get together. We are starting our own little group of "aunts and uncles" down here... keeping it in the family so to speak...ha ha!

Well, yesterday I got some great news... Kelly and Greg Murphy are the proud parents of a little girl. Molly Grace Murphy was born yesterday afternoon, in between the blizzards. So now the mini-me trio is complete! Ellie, Clare and Molly will someday be the new Maureen, Erin and Kelly. Molly is almost exactly the age difference from Clare as Kelly is from me. HOW COOL IS THAT?!

Team Healey

As we've heard several times and from several people the blizzard of 2010 hit us pretty hard here in Maryland!

Well I'd just like to take a moment and give a nod to Team Healey. We made a heck of a shovelling team here on Holly Road. I mean Sean did pretty much most of it... but I did help out a lot, in my opinion! : )

Go TEAM!!!

Chuck E. Cheese

"The place where a kid can be a kid"

Ain't that the truth! We went there yesterday to get the kids (and ourselves) out of the house. Sean started early searching for things to do indoors to get out of here for a bit. He first checked the movie schedules in Annapolis, we took the kids to see Alvin and the Chipmunks last Monday and they enjoyed it. No luck. Then he suggested Chuck E. Cheese. So we figured what the heck?!

The place was pretty empty, which was cool. When you arrive at Chuck E. Cheese they give each person in your party a unique stamp that consists of one letter and two numbers. It's placed on your wrist in a sort of black light ink. A child CANNOT leave Chuck E. Cheese with an adult unless their stamp matches. Pretty clever way of being secure in my opinion.

Well as soon as we made it through the rope the kids were off and running... WOW WOW WOW! They didn't even have any tokens yet and they were still psyched! Sean chased them while I got the pizza ordered and picked up some tokens. We got 60 tokens (that lasted about 2 hours) and the kids played stinkin roller ball pretty much the whole time. It's that game where you roll the ball up the little slope and it's supposed to go into the little hole. Once Sean showed Aidan how to roll the ball he was good... he even got it in the 10,000 point hole a couple of times. Clare on the other hand - whole different story. She was like gutter bowling that thing. I'm surprised she didn't take out some other kid. She was straight up chucking the ball all over the place. It was pretty funny. Then she got the hang of the "rolling" thing and the furthest she could get it was in the bottom part that awarded NO points. She didn't care she'd simply yell... I got it in!

Let me just say that both the kids and the parents enjoyed Chuck E. Cheese. We'll definitely go back there. It costs about the same as taking them to a restaurant for lunch but we actually get our money's worth there!

Slacker Mom

Blizzard 2010 - 2 feet of snow!

Forecast for tonight 6" - 10" more.

According to the farmers almanac another monster storm for this weekend.

AND I have NO CAMERA! I guess this is another moment in Aidan and Clare's lives we'll just have to tell them about and show them pics from other people. Man, I hope they have good memories!!

Add this to the list...

When it snows everyone panics and floods the grocery stores. It happened here last Thursday and Friday, it's happening again today because it's supposed to snow again tonight.

Many people's lists consist of bread, milk, and toilet paper. Ours consists of those 3 things and much more - snacks, apple juice, hot dogs, frozen pizza, actually, anything frozen that's not healthy for you, dessert stuff, and beer, beer, beer! I don't usually panic about the food stuff except for the milk, chocolate syrup and apple juice because those are the only things the kids drink. I always figure we'll get to the store the day after the storm and pick up the other stuff.

For this recent storm(s) we were very prepared. I went to the store early and avoided the lines so we had it all. But on Friday afternoon I was taking the trash out and thought, "Wait, do we have enough trash bags????" I usually buy those in bulk so I don't notice I'm low until it's almost too late. Lucky for us we had a whole roll cause we have had lots of trash this weekend.

Snowpocalypse

Well, well, well... it's SNOWING! The first flakes we saw were in Huntingtown at 10:00am yesterday. Right now it's 3:03 and we've got about 2 feet and it's not supposed to stop until 10:00 tonight. WHOA!!!

Last night we went over to the Cook's house for a pizza/blizzard kick-off party. Tons of fun. The kids ran around like maniacs and the adults enjoyed the snow and beer!

We woke up at 7:00 this morning. I went to the back door and put on some boots to go out and shovel a path for Saddie. I did, but she would not go pee! I finally decided to put her leash on and basically pull her through the foot and a half of snow to the plowed road to get her biz done. Once we got out there and walked down the road a little, I noticed that my neighbors carport collapsed on all 3 of their vehicles. YIKES!!!! There are several large tree limbs down on my other neighbors property. Our pool cover is full of snow, let's hope it doesn't collapse in. We have a 3 foot high fence around the pool and there's a little less than a foot still visible.

I started shovelling the driveway and then Sean finished... he did most of it! Then we ate a yummo breakfast and he headed down to our friends Mark and Ann's house. Mark is out of town working at the superbowl and Ann and her doggies are home alone. Is he a great guy/friend or what?! Thank God we bought the pathfinder last weekend with 4 wheel drive! We've already used it 3 times since then!

When Sean left I got the kids in the bath. To make it more fun and snow dayish we put blue and green food coloring in the water, tons of bubble bath and I blew bubbles at them. It was great, they soaked the bathroom, spatted all the bubbles, and were slipping and sliding when the water drained out. Everyone got dressed and watched some tv.

Sean called me from his adventure to report that Ann was okay and that he and Joe found a bar open... only those 2 would find an open bar in a blizzard! So now I've got a yummy ruben sandwich heating up in the oven to chow down on after I post this. YUMMO YUMMO!!!!

Needless to say, we Healey's are prepared (for once in our lives) and LOVIN this Blizzard of 2010! It's awesome! I mean come on, this stuff doesn't happen everyday. People need to stop panicking and just enjoy this beautiful, enormous snow storm! It'll melt at some point before Clare turns 3 - on July 11th! : )

"snow" innocent

Today at work we only had 7 kids in my class. They were like a silent movie, instead of their usual insanity they were all just chill. When it started snowing around 10:00 none of the kids noticed. They were too busy playing. So I whispered to one little girl... "Look Juli it's snowing, tell all your friends!" She looks up in wonderment and steps away from the table to the middle of the room and announces... "Look guys it's snowing!" All 7 kids dash to the windows to stare at the snow. Each of them making an "ooou" or "aah" noise. How awesome! Most of the adults in Maryland (which I'm starting to believe is a state of snow HATERS) are cursing the snow but the kids are thrilled!

Gaga ou la la

Here's a little conversation I had with Aidan the other morning in the car:

"Mom, can you turn on the radio?"

"Sure." I turn on the radio.

"Mom, do you know Wady Gaga?"

"Uh yeah Aidan I know who Lady Gaga is... how do you know who Lady Gaga is?"

"Regan wikes Wady Gaga, she showed me who she was on tv resterday."

"Oh, that's cool."

"So can you turn on a Wady Gaga song?"

WHAT? Hilarious... Aidan (and now Clare) requesting Lady (or Wady) Gaga.

February Promise

Let me take a moment to reflect on my January Promise: WALK SADDIE. Well I did walk Saddie throughout the month of January and while I did break my promise to myself in that I didn't walk her everyday. I did come pretty darn close though. I only missed 5 out of 31 days. All in all I'm pretty happy with the end result.

As for February, I'm going to finish what I started... a book given to me several months ago by my friend Jen. It's titled Eat, Pray, Love. I started the book while we were up in the mountains for Thanksgiving and have read a few pages here and there. So this month I'm going to FINISH reading it. It's a really good book, I just never seem to block off the time to read it. I'm really excited!
